Located in the heart of Coimbatore city, the temple stands in an area once occupied by a historic fort, believed to have been constructed during the time of Tippu Sultan. Although no remains of the fort exist today, the place is still known as Kottaimedu, which means "fort mound." There are many legends surrounding the origin of Coimbatore’s name. One such tale speaks of an Irula king named Covan, who ruled over Perur Nadu. The town was said to be called Covanputhur (கோவன்புத்தூர்), in his honor. It is also believed that the area where the temple now stands was once covered with Sangu flower creepers. When these were cleared to build the temple, it was initially known as Sangeechuramudayar Temple, which later came to be called Sangameshwarar Temple.
கோயம்புத்தூர் நகரின் மையத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள இந்தக் கோவில், தீபு சுல்தானின் காலத்தில் கட்டப்பட்டதாக நம்பப்படும் ஒரு பழமையான கோட்டையின் இடத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது. இன்று அந்த கோட்டையின்யும் இல்லை என்றாலும், அந்த இடம் இன்னும் கோட்டைமேடு என அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. கோயம்புத்தூர் என்ற பெயருக்குப் பல கதைகள் உள்ளன. அதில் ஒன்றான கதைப்படி, கோவன் என்ற இருளர் மன்னன், பேறூர் நாட்டு பகுதியை ஆட்சி செய்தார் என்றும், அவரைப் போற்றியே இந்த இடம் கோவன்புத்தூர் என அழைக்கப்பட்டது என்றும் கூறப்படுகிறது. மேலும், இந்தக் கோவில் அமைந்த இடத்தில் ஒருகாலத்தில் சங்கு மலர்ச் செடிகள் பெருமளவில் இருந்ததாகவும், அவை அகற்றப்பட்ட பிறகு கோவில் கட்டப்பட்டதாகவும் நம்பப்படுகிறது. அதன் காரணமாக இந்தக் கோவில் முதலில் சங்கேச்சுரமுடையார் கோவில் என அழைக்கப்பட்டது, பின்னர் அது சங்கமேஸ்வரர் கோவில் என்ற பெயரடைந்தது.
